How did the city in the United States come to dominate the economic, political and cultural life of the nation? What happened to rural America?

In the latter half of the 19th century, the United States transformed into an industrial nation, driven by the construction of large-scale factories and the development of railways. Some important factors that contributed to industrialization included the rapid growth of population and advances in technology.

By the early 1900s, urban population grew rapidly partly because many immigrants, who came from Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia, Canada, and Latin America, looked for economic opportunities. Many southern blacks also came to cities to escape from various oppressions. Those immigrants played an important role in supplying a large amount of cheap labor.

In addition, the most significant technological development was railroads which became the major method of transportation. Railroads created new forms of corporate organization. Railroads also made it possible to promote nationwide markets. The most innovative technology was the invention of mass production which made it possible to produce more materials and goods with less costs and labors.

By the early 20th century, American industrial cities were characterized by the wide availability of electricity, telephone system, and automobiles. In the meantime, rural population decreased as many people moved to cities. Since farming technology improved and became more efficient, fewer people were required for farming. As rural population decreased, political, economic and cultural power shifted to the cities.

Finally, it could be said that the industrialization of the late 19th century underpinned the technologies involved in developing industrial systems—such as power grids, telephony, computers, the Internet, and data tracking—thereby forming the foundation for the extraordinary advancements we see today, including artificial intelligence (AI).
