How had the status of working class and middle-class women changed between 1920 and 1945? Large numbers of working-class women in the 1920s, consisted of various races, engaged in law-paying jobs. African Americans in the cities often took works as janitors, dishwashers, domestic housework and other services.
Mexican immigrants entered the unskilled work forces in the Southwest and California. The number of middle-class women entered professions as they became more educated. Employment in the professions included teachers, librarians, and nurses. By 1920s, majority of middle-class women remained to stay home, as the traditional gender role was highly valued.
Women in the 1920s grew interest in birth control based on the idea of women’s right to control their own reproduction and sexuality. They also changed their behavior by smoking, drinking, wearing seductive clothes and makeup.
During the Great Depression, “New Deal” created many female positions in Roosevelt’s administration, which helped to raise women’s status in general. During World War II, the female work force rose by about 60% and many women entered factories, but most of them worked in clerical positions and other services.
However, many jobs continued to be classified according to race. For example, black women often assigned menial jobs with lower pay than white workers. By 1945, the long-lasting economic depression and unemployment were well resolved. Working-class women became middle class partly because almost everyone enjoyed higher salaries and an improved standard of living.
Finally, over the past few decades, there has been a rising trend in the number of women receiving higher education, accompanied by a remarkable improvement in women’s social status. At the same time, however, working-class women and their families continue to face significant economic challenges, as economic inequality persists to this day. The federal minimum wage has remained at $7.25 since it was last updated in 2009, as it is not automatically adjusted for inflation. Consequently, workers earning the minimum wage struggle to cover living expenses—particularly the soaring costs of housing, healthcare, and food. It is worth noting that a majority of U.S. states have set minimum wages well above $7.25, and an increasing number of states are linking wage adjustments to inflation rate. It is no exaggeration to say that the wealth gap in the United States continues to widen. While the assets held by the top 1% of the wealthy have grown substantially over the past few decades, the assets held by the bottom 50% have reportedly remained at low levels.
